This year’s Awards Presentation was held on Saturday, February 13th, 2016. 10 scientific and technical achievements - represented by 33 individual award recipients - were honoured, as well as the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), which received a special award for “a century of fundamental contributions to the advancement of motion picture standards and technology”. Unlike other Academy Awards, the accomplishments being recognized were not necessarily created and introduced in 2015. Rather, they are recognized for their significant contributions to the process of making motion pictures.

Richard Edlund, Chair of the Scientific and Technical Awards Committee stated :

This year’s honorees represent a wide range of new tech, including a modular inflatable airwall system for composited visual effects, a ubiquitous 3D digital paint system and a 3D printing technique for animation. With their outstanding, innovative work, these technologists, engineers and inventors have further expanded filmmakers’ creative opportunities on the big screen.

It is a special moment to recognize the individuals and teams that make invisible but incredibly impactful contributions to movie-making. But, here’s the catch: All 11 individuals specifically named and recognized were men!

We know amazing women work on the teams behind these efforts, just check out part of LAIKA’s team

But, we’d love to see more of the women behind these advancements recognized and in the spotlight for their achievements, as well.

Surprised like we are?
